What factors influence the design of a meaningful space?

The brief for this project was to design an urban youth hostel for the YHA whilst responding to building, site and context. Consideration was to be given to the types of activities taking place at the hostel, and how they would create an individual experience for each user.

Proposal:

I decided to create an art studio space where people can connect through art and culture. During their stay, guests would be able to learn different artistic skills and develop their own personal styles.

This project is built on the concept of an ‘organised mess’. To me this is when a space is filled with lots of different equipment, making it appear unorganised and cluttered. However, everything is displayed for the user and the equipment can easily be accessed. To build on this idea, I designed modular shelving units that can be adapted in different ways to fit the use of the space. For instance, the shelves are used for storage and as space dividers throughout the building, but also used as seating in the communal areas.

The colour scheme used represents values that I deem to be important for a creative space. After researching colour psychology, I chose orange for creativity, yellow for inspiration and green for balance.
